A Swedish axe developed during the 7th century and first used on the island of Gotland and in central parts of Sweden. The two lugs below the eye give the axe its characteristic look. The edge is short and straight. The Chopping Axe is thought to have been used primarily for felling trees as well as for timbering when building houses and boats.
